LevelUp KL comes back for a third year bigger than ever. Happening 4 – 9 November at various locations within Bangsar South; the main Conference will take place on 7th and 8th November at the Connexion@Nexus Conference & Event Centre. With over 600 participants attending the event in 2016, MDEC hopes to host over 700 delegates from all over Malaysia and South East Asia including from Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
LEVEL UP KL is an annual South East Asia Games Developers conference led by Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), with the aim to develop the games and creative content industry. This conference provides a platform bringing together local, regional, and international community of games developers, publishers, and technology providers; where anyone interested in the gaming industry can gather, learn, and share the latest information of content development technologies and business trends in the industry.
This year’s conference will see over 40 speakers from world renowned studios such as Wan Hazmer from Square Enix, Danny Koo from Marvel Entertainment, Brian Recktenwald from Naughty Dog, Grayson Chalmers from Riot Games; as well as local speakers such as Desmond Lee from Appxplore, and Falk Au Yeong from SoundtRec Malaysia. The exhibition will showcase more than 60 exhibitors, including the finalists of the South East Asia Game Awards, local game studios, participants from regional association such as Asosiasi Game Indonesia (AGI), Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP), the Singapore Chapter of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) and many more.
The 5-day programme will feature hands on session workshop with an opportunity to pick on the brains of world’s top games industry experts on varies topic, such as games design, concept art and VR. Among the most anticipated workshops are the “Environment Art Creation for AAA Games” with Brian Recktenwald of Naughty Dog as well as the games design and concept art workshop by Tan Mei Ling and Teo Yong Jin from EA Motive.
Kicking off the conference will be the SEA Game Jam, a 36-hour game jam organised by IGDA Malaysia, which will see promising games developers from South East Asia region display skills and creativity in the art of game-making to create games in a collaborative environment. In closing, there will also be the South East Asia Game Awards. Organized by MDEC and supported by Media Prima Labs, the award recognises the outstanding, artistic, creative, technical, and gameplay achievements from the games industry in the South East Asia Region.
Beyond just appealing to people interested or involved in the games industry, MDEC is also hoping to attract crowds from other business verticals such as banking, finance etc. LEVEL UP looks to bring gaming technology into other fields, leveraging the best of gaming industry technology to give businesses in other industries an upgrade.
During a media brief with Hasnul Hadi Samsudin, VP of CCT Division at MDEC, he explains that MDEC wants to be the enabler for businesses coming together. He hopes to see various partnerships formed in the conference, that could help build their businesses in various verticals. He also notes that while MDEC is the organiser for LEVEL UP events at the moment, “Ultimately, we want the industry to take over.”
In conjunction with LEVEL UP KL, MDEC will also be announcing the official launch of LEVEL UP Inc. An initiative by MDEC, the newly opened Game Hub in Bangsar South is set to help interest and inspire young games developers, content creators, artists, start-ups, students, and the general public in the opportunities in games development, content creation and commercialisation.
Participants can purchase Conference-only ticket, Conference + Business Connection Program (BCP) ticket and/or individual tickets for the workshops. Ticket prices range from RM100 to RM800 and can be purchased online.
