Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), recently held the #mydigitalmaker Career Awareness Programme at Multimedia University (MMU), Cyberjaya.
The two-day programme, targeted at school leavers as well as matriculation, pre-university and TVET students, was part of MDEC’s ongoing Digital Tech Career Awareness Roadshow which runs from January to March 2017.
“It is time that we embrace the fact that the digital economy is the way forward. We need to prepare our future workforce for the digital world because digital technology is inevitable and will continue to expand. MDEC wants to help nurture curious and passionate future digital problem solvers and producers who are able to think critically and analytically, and help transform Malaysia into a digital nation.
“Through #mydigitalmaker, we can achieve that target and fulfil future demand for digital technology experts,” said MDEC chief executive officer Yasmin Mahmood.
Sixty teams comprising the top 2016 SPM candidates from 49 selected schools in Malaysia participated in the Mobile Apps Competition organised by #mydigitalmaker.
On Feb 24, 20 teams made it to the semi-finals to compete for five spots in the final round.
On Feb 25, the five teams pitched their final apps to judges and three winning projects were selected based on their ability to craft apps that solved the identified problems and how they planned on marketing the apps.
Nine winners made up of two teams from Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) and one team from MRSM Batu Pahat took home RM20,000 worth of Scholastic Awards each, which included an Apple MacBook Pro to support their digital technology tertiary studies.
#mydigitalmaker is a joint initiative by MDEC and MoE, with support from the private sector and academia. It is aimed at creating a nation of digital makers by exposing Malaysian youths to the creative and innovative aspects of digital technology.
