Arts: June’s Musical Goodies


Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) continues its musical goodies this June 2010 with some exciting music treats.

For a start, make a date with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) ensemble when they present a one-hour chamber concert on Wednesday, 2 June 10 at 6.30 pm in a programme themed Viennese Classics.

Then, the PETRONAS Performing Arts Group (PPAG) returns to the DFP stage to present two showcases themed Keroncong Kasih. It will feature a selection of ‘keroncong’ programme in its authentic form as well as rearrangements in a more contemporary feel. These concerts are scheduled on Monday, 7 June 10 and Tuesday, 8 June 10 at 8.30 pm.

The MPO Legacy series is back with concerts themed The Titan on Saturday, 12 June 10 at 8.30 pm and Sunday, 13 June 10 at 3 pm. Conductor Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos will lead the MPO to present works by Mahler and Albeniz.

DFP Showcase series will present you Jazzaar & MPYO, a jazz festival with a heart for cultural exchange and music education. Featuring trumpeter Randy Brecker, saxophonist Fritz Renold and their Bostonian friends, the concerts are scheduled on Tuesday, 15 June 10 and Wednesday, 16 June 10 at 8.30 pm.

Next, the MPO will present concerts under Music Of The Nation banner featuring works on Visions Of Italy on Saturday, 19 June 10 at 8.30 pm and Sunday, 20 June 10 at 3 pm. Under the baton of Yan Pascal Tortelier, the MPO will perform works composed by Tchaikovsky, Hindemith and Berlioz, and the concerts will feature violist Maxim Rysanov.

The Age Of Elegance series returns with the Glory Of The Trumpet featuring conductor Martin Haselbock and trumpeter David Guerrier. The concerts are scheduled on Saturday, 26 June 10 at 8.30 pm and Sunday, 27 June 10 at 3 pm.

Finally, a chamber concert by the MPO ensemble is scheduled on Wednesday, 30 June 10 at 6.30 pm with a theme Wind Ensemble At Large.
