Technology Enterprise Snippets

Adding Power to IBM’s Services
At IBM’s annual Technology Conference & Expo in Malaysia, the multinational corporation introduces its new POWER7 Systems  – a system designed to manage the most demanding emerging applications, ranging from smart electrical grids to real-time analytics for financial markets.

Todd Morris, Director of Worldwide Power Systems Sale, Systems and Technology Group, IBM USA, comments: “Smarter solutions require smarter systems that can scale quickly and efficiently, optimise performance, flexibly adapt to changing requirements and demands, avoid downtime, save energy and automate management tasks. These are some of the key value propositions the new POWER7 Systems brings to any propositions.”

Its new system incorporates a number of industry-unique technologies for the specialised demands of new applications and services that rely on processing an enormous number of concurrent transactions and date while analysing information in real time.

Need for More Security Increases1262266_21971210
A recent study entitled 2010 State of Enterprise Security Study by Symantec Corp reveals organisations’, globally and in Malaysia, top issue to be security. It comes to no surprise as 75% of global and 50% of Malaysian organisations have experienced cyber attacks in the past 12 months.

“Protecting information today is more challenging than ever,” says Paul Woo, principal consultant for enterprise security of Symantec, Malaysia.

Woo adds: “By putting in place a security blueprint that protects their infrastructure and information, enforces IT policies, and manages systems more efficiently, businesses can increase their competitive edge in today’s information-driven world.”

An Alternative for Business Communication
Many large businesses are investing in telepresence solutions to be an alternative for business travels when budgets do not permit. An estimate of 71.1% growth of revenue for ready-built telepresence suites in Asia Pacific for 2009 leads Frost & Sullivan’s expectation of growth of 64.4%, with revenues of just over US$73mil by year-end.

Despite these solutions being more costly than conventional conferencing systems, Frost & Sullivan industry manager Pranabesh Nath believes that “the immersive nature of telepresence enhances user experience and productivity, while simultaneously trimming the operational expenditure of a company.”

Nath shares that major vendors were quick to seize the opportunity and were successful selling their systems in the last two years with generous discounts due to the economic climate, but quickly adds that he expect competition to be stiff in the next two years from more affordable mid-range high-definition video conferencing systems, as well as customised immersive solutions which system integrators are starting to offer at lower price points.
