The 2010 Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific Aerospace & Defense Awards continues to showcase highly commendable line-up of recipients for the third consecutive year. Recipients sharing the lime-light this year have had to battle and prove themselves in an even more challenging period than their counterparts from the previous years.

A specialty this year is the co-location of the Awards banquet with the Singapore Airshow 2010 where Frost & Sullivan is the knowledge partner. The Awards banquet was held on early February at Crowne Plaza Hotel at Terminal 3, Changi International Airport.

A total of 17 leading organizations in the fields of general aviation, defense, homeland security, maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO), aerospace manufacturing, major support services, airports and commercial air transportation will be joining the hall of fame as they bag prestigious titles reflecting their success for the year 2009.

The Malaysia Airports clinched two award titles that cited them as the Airport Investment Company of the Year and the Airport of the Year (Above 15 million Passengers Annually) for Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Composites Technology Research Malaysia and Firefly joined in the honour roll to pride the nation’s outstanding aerospace industry, with their awards.

Speaking about the success of the recipients, Subhranshu Sekhar Das, Director of Asia Pacific Aerospace & Defense practice at Frost & Sullivan says: “To counter the downturn in the aviation sector, the entire industry, especially the Asian players, have turned their focus on implementing best practices within their operations. Such smart executions have helped Asian aviation players successfully align their processes alongside the best global standards. This has in turn driven the corporate growth of these organizations and their respective operating sectors, despite the historic downturn.

“The improved operational and supply chain efficiency coupled with the steady turnaround of the Asian giants has attracted the attention of multinational players and has positively impacted the global aviation landscape.”

The Frost & Sullivan Awards are presented to companies that demonstrate best practices in the industry, commending their diligence, commitment, and innovative business strategies required to advance and excel in the competitive global marketplace.

Every year, the awards are given to companies based on actual market and technology performance that include revenue, market share, technology leadership and overall growth.

In addition to the tough market that the recipients were already operating in, this year the challenge to excel was further intensified with a global survey that served as a complementing screening in addition to the usual in-house secondary research.

The Association of Aerospace Industries Singapore (AAIS) is the supporting organisation for the awards banquet. Aerospace Singapore and Business Today are the media partners, while PR Newswire is the official newswire for the awards.

In Sabah, there are still many communities living without electricity, which hampers their socio-economic development. Rural electrification through ‘conventional methods’ such as grid connection and diesel generators are not only costly but also results in emissions that are harmful to human health and the environment.

In today’s era of information and communication technology, electricity supply is the most essential infrastructure for development. The supply of electricity is also key in providing job opportunity and vital income for village residents.

In light of this, DiGi Telecommunications and Tonibung (or Friends of Village Development) recently joined forces to support and fund a micro-hydro project in Kampung Lumpagas (Kg.Lumpagas), Sabah. Kg.Lumpagas is a Murut community village of 131 people and is situated on the border of Sabah and Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Once completed, the supply of electricity will reduce the dependency on diesel generators thus offsetting the trend of burning and emission of greenhouse gases and toxic pollutants that contribute to the climatic changes in the region. The micro hydro system will provide basic lighting and power communal freezers that are essential for this subsistence community to keep their fish and meat fresh. The available energy can also create socio economic spinoffs through small scale food processing and other cottage industry in the community.

The project, which is scheduled be completed by June this year will cost approximately RM160,000 and generate up to 3kW of electricity.

DiGi’s Head of Corporate Responsibility, Vimal Kumar said: “For the first time, the villagers of Kg.Lumpagas will harness water from a nearby river to generate electricity, a focus which is in line with the 9th Malaysia plan on rural electrification.

“The villagers will have access to a welcomed form of ‘clean energy’. In addition to that, the micro hydro system will also provide mechanical power to run agro processing tools such as rice mills and flourmills. This system will gradually but certainly phase out the use of firewood, kerosene, diesel and petrol engines which contributes towards global warming.”

According to Adrian Lasimbang, Director of Tonibung: “The community will be involved in setting up the project although Tonibung will help in setting up the technical aspects of the system. Being part of this project will give the community a sense of ownership and the confidence to undertake, manage and mobilize their own people to work towards completing the micro hydro system. The village committee, through its project leader and supervisor, will contribute to the planning and design of the community capacity-building workshops to ensure that the ideas and needs from the communities are accounted for.”

This project is part of DiGi’s Deep Green initiative which addresses energy efficiency within the company’s business and broader areas of sustainability with related stakeholders.

Heading: EMC Malaysia’s Golf Day for the Media

EMC Malaysia, a fully owned subsidiary of EMC, the world leader in information infrastructure, hosted a day of golf for members of the media in The Mines Resort and Golf Club recently.

First time golfers were treated to a golf clinic to introduce them to the sport, while more experienced golfers from the media were invited to participate in a friendly tournament against players from EMC, its partners and customers.

Twenty-six members of the media accepted EMC Malaysia Managing Director Peter Goh’s invitation to an afternoon of golf.

Golf is one of my passions. I love everything about it, especially when I have an opportunity to introduce new players to the game,” says Goh. “Golf is not easy but the first time you feel everything come together into a good stroke and you see your ball fly across the course you’re hooked.”

Goh arranged for True Golf Academy Golf Pro Chong Chee Meng to coach the first timers. Chong filled the clinic with jokes and golf trivia that had everyone relaxed and at their ease so that when the time came to take some real shots no one was embarrassed when their first mighty swings barely rolled the ball a few feet. However, Chong’s attentive advice and constant encouragement was soon bearing fruit as one by one everyone found their swing.

“Playing golf was a brand new experience for me and I’m really glad I participated in the clinic,” says Vinodhani Nair from Reach Publishing. “All of us learnt a lot about golf, got a hands-on feel of the game and we had a lot of fun doing it. It was a brilliant afternoon.”

The golf tournament was won by EMC’s team although the smiles on all the player’s faces show that everyone had a great time. Trophies, prizes of Iomega portable hard disk drives and TaylorMade bags together with the Winner’s Purse were presented at a dinner held at Vincenzo Ristorante Italiano in Bangsar.

“Playing golf is about finding focus, having a goal, planning, networking, perseverance and being prepared come rain or shine. You set your posture, take your grip, clear your mind of distractions and then take your swing. If you’ve done your part then the ball will fly true,” says Goh.

“It’s an approach I’ve taken into other aspects of my life including my work. When you focus and take care of the details that are in front of you success will follow.” Goh was placed second among individual players in the tournament.
