EMC Malaysia, a fully owned subsidiary of EMC, the world leader in information infrastructure, hosted a day of golf for members of the media in The Mines Resort and Golf Club recently.
First time golfers were treated to a golf clinic to introduce them to the sport, while more experienced golfers from the media were invited to participate in a friendly tournament against players from EMC, its partners and customers.
Twenty-six members of the media accepted EMC Malaysia Managing Director Peter Goh’s invitation to an afternoon of golf.
“Golf is one of my passions. I love everything about it, especially when I have an opportunity to introduce new players to the game,” says Goh. “Golf is not easy but the first time you feel everything come together into a good stroke and you see your ball fly across the course you’re hooked.”
Goh arranged for True Golf Academy Golf Pro Chong Chee Meng to coach the first timers. Chong filled the clinic with jokes and golf trivia that had everyone relaxed and at their ease so that when the time came to take some real shots no one was embarrassed when their first mighty swings barely rolled the ball a few feet. However, Chong’s attentive advice and constant encouragement was soon bearing fruit as one by one everyone found their swing.
“Playing golf was a brand new experience for me and I’m really glad I participated in the clinic,” says Vinodhani Nair from Reach Publishing. “All of us learnt a lot about golf, got a hands-on feel of the game and we had a lot of fun doing it. It was a brilliant afternoon.”
The golf tournament was won by EMC’s team although the smiles on all the player’s faces show that everyone had a great time. Trophies, prizes of Iomega portable hard disk drives and TaylorMade bags together with the Winner’s Purse were presented at a dinner held at Vincenzo Ristorante Italiano in Bangsar.
“Playing golf is about finding focus, having a goal, planning, networking, perseverance and being prepared come rain or shine. You set your posture, take your grip, clear your mind of distractions and then take your swing. If you’ve done your part then the ball will fly true,” says Goh.
“It’s an approach I’ve taken into other aspects of my life including my work. When you focus and take care of the details that are in front of you success will follow.” Goh was placed second among individual players in the
tournament.
